Generally, only those between the ages of 7 and 13 years old are accountable in a juvenile court. Someone below age 7 is considered too young and those above age 14 are considered old enough to be held accountable in either juvenile or adult courts. However, not all juveniles who commit a crime may end up in juvenile court.
A police officer has three choices:
1. Detain and warn the minor against further violations, and then let the minor go free.
2. Detain and warn the minor against further violations, but hold the minor until a parent or guardian comes for the minor.
3. Place the minor in custody and refer the case to a juvenile court.
