The crime of forgery usually refers to the making of a fake document, the altering of an existing document, or the forging of a signature without authorization. Documents that can be the object of forgery include but are not limited to contracts, identification cards, and legal certificates. Most states require that forgery be done with the intent to commit fraud, theft, or larceny.
