Parole and Probation are two ways that a person who has been convicted of a crime can avoid spending time in jail. Though they are similar, they do differ in several important ways. Parole is the supervised release of a prisoner before his or her sentence has been completed. Parole is conditional, and the conditions usually include obedience to the law, maintaining a job, and contacting a parole officer on a regular basis. A

Probation differs from parole in that it is part of a criminal’s original sentence. A criminal may be sentenced to Probation rather than jail-time, it can be in additional to time served in prison. Like Parole, an individual on Probation must abide by certain conditions, which may be quite stringent. Violation of Parole or Probation may result in additional time in prison.
