Traffic Violation - Answers and Information
The Point System

The Point System

While the traffic violation point system differs from state to state, the principle is the same. The state assigns a point value to each offense, the more serious the offense, the greater the number of points. For example, driving 10 mph above the speed limit may be two points and drinking and driving may be eight points; each state approaches this slightly differently. Once a certain threshold is reached, penalties start to be assessed. For example, reaching eight points in a single year may mean an additional $100 fine; reaching 16 may mean a license suspension. Points can often be erased by attending safe driving schools. A certain period of time (usually a year) without any traffic violations can also help clear one’s record of points.
