A driver’s license suspension is a consequence for violating the motor vehicle code of New Jersey. Motor Vehicles will automatically suspend your license once you receive 12 points on your license. You can receive points for a variety of moving violations; for instance, speeding can be anywhere from two, four or five point tickets. Careless driving is two points. Reckless driving is five points. They’re just examples. So once you receive a certain amount of points Motor Vehicles will direct a notice of suspension to your last known address, and that is very important, if you move and fail to contact Motor Vehicles with your new address you can’t use that as a defense that you didn’t get the notice because you moved and you hadn’t notified them. You are responsible for notifying Motor Vehicles every time you move. They will send out a notice and they’ll say Mr. or Mrs. Jones we’re suspending your privilege to operate a motor vehicle and there are about 50 reasons why they can suspend your license, but the most common one is you have too many points on your license.

Another common one is you failed to respond to a ticket. If you ever get a ticket and you don’t go to court, the court will issue a warrant for your arrest, you’ll have to post bail but most importantly Motor Vehicles will suspend your license.

So these are the reasons why it is very important any time you get a ticket that you respond to it and you keep in mind that those points will eventually come back to haunt you, and you will, most likely, receive a license suspension order from Motor Vehicles.

I say Motor Vehicles, it’s also called the Commission, but we all know what we’re talking about. Motor Vehicles will suspend your license for too many points so you have to handle that.
